FAME FREE
FUEL
Why do I need it?
The EU Directive 2009/30/EC requires that,
from 1st January 2011, all gas oil marketed
for use in canal boats must contain no more
than 10 milligrams of sulphur per kilogram
of fuel (virtually ‘sulphur free’). A concern
is that some suppliers will provide 'road
diesel' with a red marker dye.
This type of
fuel can contain up to 7% biodiesel or
FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) which can
cause detrimental side effects in storage
and when used in boats.
FAME free fuel may be more expensive to
purchase initially but will help avoid
possible costly side effects to your boats
fuel systems in the longer term.
What are the benefits?
· Less harmful emissions
· Reduce risk of biological
contamination or diesel bug in your
fuel systems
